Dept. of Health Recommendations

Procedures to Follow when COVID-19 Cases Occur Within School Buildings:

When counties are in a “Substantial” level of transmission, schools are asked to track their COVID-19 cases. Depending on the size of the school, districts must initiate a review of their cases with the Department of Health (DOH) when they reach a certain number of cases in a rolling 14-day period.

Steps to Take When Number of COVID-19 Cases Require Further Action
(updated 4/5/21):

  • Close school(s) for 2-3 days (shift to remote learning)*
  • Clean area(s) where cases spent time
  • Public health staff will direct close contacts to quarantine

*This new guidance recommends a minimum two-day school closure when communities are in substantial levels of transmission; however, Lancaster County school districts have been granted permission by the DOH and PDE to work with Penn Medicine LGH to shorten the length of closure time if that is deemed appropriate and we can confirm that all the required steps were taken.
